Taking care of your skin is critical for maintaining a healthy, bright complexion, especially winter skincare. The frigid, dry air of winter may drain your skin’s natural hydration, resulting in flakiness, dryness, and even irritation. To counteract these effects, it’s vital to hydrate your skin with a good moisturizer, drink enough of water, and use mild cleansers.

Remember to protect your skin from the harsh winter sun—UV radiation may be harmful even on cold days. Stick to a regular skincare program and pay special attention to your skin’s needs to keep it looking and feeling its best all winter.

Dr. Shikha Khare, a dermatologist doctor at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital in Noida Extension, spoke exclusively to Jagran English on how to care for your skin during winter.

“Winter necessitates special skin care,” stated Dr. Shikha. Because of the cold, dry air and interior heating, skin hydration is necessary. Low humidity can cause trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), which causes skin dryness. To address this, use clinically proven moisturizers with moisture-locking components like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and glycerin. To protect the skin’s barrier, use them immediately after showering. To prevent depriving the skin of its natural oils, gentle cleaning is vital. Avoid extended contact to hot water by using moderate, pH-balanced, fragrance-free cleaners. Sunscreen is still important in the winter since UV rays can still hurt your skin, especially with snow reflecting UV radiation. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply as needed while spending time outside. Because indoor heating reduces humidity levels dramatically, consider using a humidifier to maintain ideal indoor humidity.”

“Exfoliation can help remove dead skin cells that accumulate during the winter, promoting a brighter complexion,” she said. Avoid harsh scrubbing and use mild exfoliants with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) once or twice a week. Hot showers should be avoided since they might deplete your skin’s natural oils. After a bath, pat your skin dry with a cotton towel. Wear layers, gloves, scarves, and caps to protect your skin from the harsh winter environment. A healthy diet rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids, along with enough hydration, helps your skin from the inside out. Consult a dermatologist if you have severe skin problems or persistent symptoms for individualized winter skincare suggestions, which may involve clinical treatments such as topical steroids if warranted.”
